Fox, Wolves & Coyote Viewing

Coyotes

Coyotes are a common species in Arkansas and can be found all over Newton County in the Ozark National Forest and the Buffalo River area. They typically live in wooded areas but can also be found in open fields and prairies.

Coyotes are most active during dawn and dusk hours. Being incredible shy, coyotes may adapt and become more nocturnal or even increase their daytime activity to avoid human encounters therefore they are difficult to spot.

Foxes

Red foxes and gray foxes can be spotted throughout the Ozark National Forest and the Buffalo River area. Foxes tend to be skittish, so if you spot one, consider yourself one of the lucky ones. People who live in those areas tend to spot them as the foxes are frolicking in their backyards or tending to their young.

Foxes are typically nocturnal creatures that sleep during the day and come out at night. You are most likely to see foxes at dawn or dusk as they are often more active then.

Wolves

Wolves have been extinct in our area since 1942. According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, wolf sightings in Arkansas are more likely wolf-dog and wolf-coyote cross animals, possibly containing some bloodline from the red or gray wolves which once were abundant in the area.

Wolves are typically nocturnal creatures as well. They sleep during the day and come out at night.
